I think we sometimes overlook the artists among us here in Lyons. Sally Van Meter is a true artist in many different ways. Already a Grammy Award winning Dobro player, she is quickly becoming a wonderful filmmaker.
As music fans have often asked me, “What exactly is a Dobro?” I feel a quick definition is necessary. A Dobro is an acoustic guitar with a metal resonator built into its body. This resonator acts as an amplifier. John Dopyera invented it in the early 1930s. Dopyera and his brother struck out in the late 20’s in search of a way to create a louder guitar. He started his first band, called The Marauder, at sixteen. “I was raised in a multi-cultural neighborhood where blues, R&B, and Mexican music was the accepted norm. That’s what I thought everyone listened to.”
The sign on the door read “Closed” and the times of operation stated, “Monday, 4:00.” Still, a car, with the driver’s door open, sat alongside the road in front of The Merc (short for Mercantile), located in the small town of Jamestown. A neighbor offered to go inside to get Rainbow.
