Anniversary Party For Marquee Magazine

By David McIntyre, Lyons Blueologist

The Soul Rebels brass band formed when Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, originally members of New Orleans’ iconic Dejean’s Young Olympia brass band, decided they wanted to play the new exciting music they were hearing on the radio while respecting the tradition they loved. Both New Orleans natives, the pair was steeped in the fundamentals of New Orleans jazz, but inevitably

Dobro Queen of Lyons

By Lyons Bluesologist, David McIntyre

I think we sometimes overlook the artists among us here in Lyons. Sally Van Meter is a true artist in many different ways. Already a Grammy Award winning Dobro player, she is quickly becoming a wonderful filmmaker.

As music fans have often asked me, “What exactly is a Dobro?” I feel a quick definition is necessary. A Dobro is an acoustic guitar with a metal resonator built into its body. This resonator acts as an amplifier. John Dopyera invented it in the early 1930s.  Dopyera and his brother struck out in the late 20’s in search of a way to create a louder guitar. The brothers called their new instrument a “Dobro,” which means “good” in their native Slovak language.

RockyGrass Sold Out!

Planet Bluegrass announced on Monday that three-day passes for this year’s forty-first annual RockyGrass Festival (July 26 through 28) sold-out in early January, exactly one month earlier than ever before. But take heart fellow Lyons residents, as with past years Planet Bluegrass has graciously reserved a large block of both three-day passes and single-day tickets to sell to Lyons locals. These tickets will be sold exclusively at The Stone Cup beginning next week on Wednesday, February 20.

As with past years, approximately half of these tickets will be sold at a “locals” discount rate.

Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys

 Special Pre-Super Bowl Party

By David McIntyre

Don’t be mistaken by the name, this band is no joke; they are very serious about their music. This band from Lansing has been together for about two years, after a chance encounter at an open stage between founders Lindsay Lou and Josh Rilko. Her background was in pop and

Afrosippi Band

Dan Treanor & Erica Brown

By David McIntyre

Veteran blues man Dan Treanor has been entertaining and thrilling audiences for over thirty-five years. Born in 1947, and raised in Pueblo, Colorado, he started playing guitar at fifteen years old. Discovering the blues and R&B through a local radio station, Treanor developed a lifelong passion for the blues. He started his first band, called The Marauder, at sixteen. “I was raised in a multi-cultural neighborhood where blues, R&B, and Mexican music was the accepted norm. That’s what I thought everyone listened to.”
