Get “Honkified”

By David McIntyre, Lyons Bluesologist

Innovative and fresh, the Nouveaux Honkies are a must see band. Their sound and style cannot be categorized, so they call it “nouveaux honk.” It is an eclectic mix of rockabilly, blues, country and soul. Lyrical in nature, soulful in presentation, and hypnotic in mood, it will immediately turn you into a

Catching Up With Bella Betts

By Pearl Haddad
Editor’s note: Pearl Haddad will be entering the sixth grade at Lyons Middle/Senior High School next month.

I was so excited when I was asked to write the Pickin’ Sprouts column. I wasn’t sure who to write about, but then I heard about a twelve-year-old girl who just played with Mollie O’Brien in Lyons, and I

Insatiable
Alexa DiSalvo

Drunken drawings
scribbled on skin
tattoos
I section your body
Will I ever get enough?
So, with pen I ration smooth parts
and rougher ones
the calloused palm
I read like brail
even though I know
That story
by heart
When we’re apart
I shuffle barefoot and bones
malnourished
depraved
reprimanding my indecent hunger
Still, by night hour
mouth tongue fingers
devour...
Meticulous blueprint
blurs wet
ink stains and gloss
So lost
Even though I know
That map by heart.

Bonnie And Taylor Sims

By David McIntyre, Lyons Bluesologist

I recently sat down with my favorite musical couple, Taylor and Bonnie Sims. There was so much going on in their collective careers that I wanted to get it straight from their lips.

Let’s start with how they arrived on the local music scene. In 2003 Taylor relocated from Texas to Gunnison Colorado to work on a ranch there. He and Alex Johnstone and Chris Elliott started playing music together and a bond began. They moved back to Texas and with Jessica Smith recorded their first CD there as Spring Creek bluegrass band.
