Lyons Bluesologist - David Mcintyre

All Female bluegrass band

With an all-female lineup, four-piece Giddyup Kitty is an anomaly in the male dominated bluegrass world. For the bluegrass traditionalist the thought of an

“all girl” band no doubt screams “blasphemy.” Assumptions and stereotypes aside, Giddyup  Kitty’s instrumentation and vocals are stellar and their groove is as spot-on as any, regardless of style.

I think it was March, 2007,  that I first encountered Kerry and Adrienne in another all-female outfit called Little Liza Jane.
Marni arrived, and with Kerry and  Adrienne, they started Giddyup Kitty. From the get go, I could tell these gals had a chemistry that was infectious. The harmonies are what caught my attention and then when they added Nancy, the line-up was complete.

Kerry Claxton, mandolinist was born into a Kentucky bluegrass family and sports fine memories of playing music early with her family. When she heard David Grisman, she changed her main instrument from guitar to mandolin. She is an award winning singer/songwriter and is also an accomplished musician on mandolin, guitar, and bass.

Adrienne York is a Colorado native and ex-pig farmer. She is an accomplished vocalist who plays dobro, guitar, piano, and an occasional snare drum. As a songwriter, she has won accolades at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, and KBCO’s songwriter’s competition.

Marni Pickens is a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, and a lot of bass player. Born in Colorado she moved to New York City, as a teen. She has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Joey Ramone, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ronnie Spector, and Gretchen Phillips to name a few.

Nancy Steinberger, since starting playing piano at age four, is fully paper-trained. She studied classical violin at the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan. After meeting Kerry in 2003, Nancy started playing bluegrass fiddle and quickly took first place in the RockyGrass fiddle contest.

Giddyup Kitty is a bluegrass band that weaves fine melodies with rich harmony. These award-winning musicians create a show that leaves an audience joyful and asking for more! Classy, sweet, and smooth, you’ll be a believer, once you catch Giddyup Kitty fever! The show is a tight blend of bluegrass, with a bit of Americana, gospel, and country tossed in for flavor. Playing both original and traditional songs, Giddyup Kitty has great harmony and really cooks on their instruments.

After the break-up of Little Liza Jane in 2007, Giddyup Kitty played their first show back at Oskar Blues in February 2009. Now with the addition of Nancy, who seems to allow the gals a little bit more freedom to branch out in their songs, they have become one of our most popular Sunday performers at Oskar’s. People old and young all seem to enjoy their music as well as the banter between songs (even Marni’s jokes) and get up and dance to these fine musicians.

Come on over to Oskar’s Lyons on September 5 or Oskar’s Longmont on September 26 and spend a fun filled Sunday evening enjoying good ole American music from 6 to 9 p.m. You will be entertained in the highest degree.
