If it’s mid-August with afternoon showers, and the kids are back at school, it must be time for FolksFest. The twenty-third annual Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, a.k.a., “Summit on the Song” got underway Monday morning with the always-popular prelude, the Song School. Each year hundreds of singer/songwriter/musicians come together for four days and nights at
Planet Bluegrass to learn the art of writing and performing a good song. Friday morning at 10 a.m., the gates to the festival grounds officially open to the public, and thousands of music fans, a.k.a. “Festavarians” make the Planet their home for the next three days.
The music begins with the Songwriter Showcase on the main stage from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This year’s lineup includes Robby Hecht, Ellis, Lucius, Mary Gauthier, Colin Hay, and Loreena McKennitt on Friday. On Saturday Shannon Whitworth leads things off, followed by Seryn, Johnnyswim, Foy Vance, Shane Koyczan & the Short Story Long, Patty Griffin, and the John Butler Trio. Sunday’s lineup will feature Chic Gamine, Lynn Miles Nathaniel Rateliff, Ariana Gillis, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, Colin Meloy, and John Prine closes the festival.
