Paula Nelson’s band is returning to Oskar Blues on Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12. Friday night, Nelson’s band will be in Longmont at Oskar’s Homemade Liquids and Solids with Taylor & Bonnie Sims opening up for them starting at 8 p.m. On Saturday the band will be at Lyons Oskar Blues with Jubal and Monica as the opening act, also at 8 p.m.

This will be Nelson’s fourth run of shows at Oskars with the first one in 2008. The band just seems to get tighter and tighter as they progress with the same members from the start. The band released a single last summer of the tune Jackson, and here is what the writer of this classic country song, Johnny Cash, had to say about Paula’s version of his tune, “I love Paula’s Jackson! It’s feisty! It’s fun! Reminds me of a Texas filly and a wild mustang riding full gallop into Jackson, kickin’ up dirt and ya-hooin’. Love and good wishes to Paula and the band. Them boys can pick!”

Paula Nelson has been “Under the Influence” of music legends her entire life. Learning to play piano at age seven (taught by her aunt Bobbi Nelson), she has quietly been writing, singing, and performing for most of her 42 years (she had a birthday Oct. 27th). Nelson has recorded and released four records to date, with mostly original songs written by her. “Under the Influence” is a project dedicated to the legends that she grew up with, real life friends and family that she spent time with, learned from, and made music with. “Jackson” is the first single from this project. Nelson has been performing “Jackson” in front of enthusiastic audiences for several years, and of course, Johnny (Cash) and June (Carter) were a big part of her early childhood years. “Jackson” is a perfect introduction to Paula’s sassy fun-loving personality. “Under the Influence” will feature cover songs from several of her influences, including Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, Leon Russell, Jesse Colter, Billy Joe Shaver, and of course, her father, Willie Nelson. She will release a series of singles throughout the year with the final CD and DVD (with live interviews/road tours/ studio sessions) being released hopefully by the end of the year. Some have said, “the single is amazing, sublime and surprising.”

Covering one of the most iconic songs in music is gutsy. I love her voice, phrasing and the total honesty of her performance. Wow, Paula Nelson is a treasure. Vocally, and  artistically she feels like she is in the pocket, in control, and although a veteran, like she is just getting her swagger on and ready to leave an indelible mark on music. She hit her stride with her last CD, “Little Cities,” and the sky is the limit for her now. If you haven’t gotten to see and hear this band, you owe it to yourself to come on out and become an instant fan like so many people who have witnessed what everybody in rockin’ country music is talking about. She is one of the most likeable musicians I have ever met.
