Dr. Ian Kott, is a seasoned and dedicated pediatric dentist with his doctorate in Dental Surgery from University of Michigan. After serving several tours of duty in Alaska as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service, as Senior Dental Officer in U. S. Coast Guard, and Deputy Chief Clinic Administrator with Indian Health Services. He has opened a practice in Boulder. Following these tours, which included every conceivable manner of general dentistry, as well as dealing with the effects of early rampant tooth decay, Dr. Kott felt compelled to concentrate on children’s health issues. From Alaska he moved to Boston to complete his postgraduate residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Tufts University of Dental Medicine.
Searching for the right environment and community philosophy to ground him and his family’s future, Dr. Kott and wife, Erin, and their two young sons chose the foothill community of Lyons to live. A few months ago Dr. Kott opened his joyful Kott Pediatric Dentistry office in Boulder in a professional building on 28th St. “We found our dream place, and community, we are digging in our roots – deeply,” says Kott.
Committed to early care and nutrition counseling, as well as dental surgery, trauma treatment, interceptive growth modification, and restoration for children, Dr. Kott states, “It’s all about the child and his/her comfort level. Sometimes the first visit is just to introduce the office and let the child feel at home, familiarize them with the instruments and ask questions.” The cheerful reception area, complete with a buoyant welcoming blue butterfly, chartreuse , coral, and sand colored walls, a play area with toy train, and furniture sized for children, opens up to the same colorful treatment area surrounded by windows full of light and nature - it is the antithesis of the static sterile dental institution. Local artists’ whimsical paintings and drawings are found throughout the offices and they expect to add more offerings to celebrate and showcase community talent.
A wonderful hands-on area, complete with child-sized basin for practicing correct brushing techniques and washing their hands, is brim full of bright wicker baskets for the child to rummage through and pick out dental tools that he/she can take home – toothbrushes, pastes, and toys. Aware of the comfort level required also by the parents or guardians, Dr. Kott has provided seating in all treatment and surgical areas, as well as one-way mirrors so that privacy and the least distraction can be provided to a child, yet allowing open observation by family. One room entirely furnished for the comfort of a nursing mother or parent with smaller siblings is right off one surgical area. At no time, is the child patient sequestered away from family; Dr. Kott has provided carefully arranged family participation and observation areas.
Every effort for comfort has been provided so that the child will look forward to the visit and be open to understanding the role he/she plays in keeping their teeth healthy. It is an early empowerment in taking responsibility for themselves. Having his own children has taught him an awareness that could not be taught to that degree in any residency program; he understands the importance both as professional and father.
Although intensely valuable practice years, Dr. Kott was continually distressed over his Alaska experience in watching small children’s teeth rotting away and consequently injurious to the child’s overall health; he is resolved to saving every tooth possible, extracting a tooth is the last measure. He takes most insurance policies, and most notably, Medicaid and CHP+, and will conscientiously work with families’ financial issues to ensure his motto, “Provide highest quality dental care through positive experience”; one must add after talking with him, “and heart.”
Upon the opening of Kott Pediatric Dentistry, he immediately enrolled in the Adopt-A-Smile program of the Boulder Valley School District which provides underserved children quality needed dental care. “It is a privilege to be part of this program and we’ve already had a very positive impact in saving the teeth of a child.”
There are two special offers for new patients on the website: a free health screening exam and cleaning for infants 18 mos. or younger – a $136 value; and a child exam, cleaning and fluoride treatment for $75.00, a savings of $122.00 (x-rays not included.)
Dr. Kott is building a practice that will be able to serve the entire cultural spectrum of the community; there is a Spanish-speaking dental assistant and should further language proficiencies be needed, they will be addressed.
