Featuring Art through the Lens Photo Contest

On September 17, 2010, from 6 9 p.m., ArtLink Longmont will host ArtWalk and  Longmont’s  historic Main Street will turn into a pedestrian arts experience with more than twenty art and ten music venues, street theatre, dance, children’s activities, face painting, balloon artists and much more.  All events are free and open to the public. Sponsoring Main Street businesses are transformed into art galleries and are open late for the event. Car traffic will be diverted from Main Street between 3rd to Longs Peak Avenues, thanks to the City of Longmont.

The September event will feature the winners in the 3rd annual Art Through the Lens photo contest. Art Through the Lens, is a celebration of professional and amateur Colorado photographers.  The unique aspect of this competition is the opportunity for many contestants to exhibit their work at a public arts event.  This year’s photography exhibition will be held at the Friday, September 17, 2010 ArtWalk Longmont event. And the winners of the competition are…

1st Place Professional – Tom Crosman
2nd Place Professional – Ron Sweetin
3rd Place Professional – Lisa Hebert

1st Place Amateur Adult – Nick Moore
2nd Place Amateur Adult – Bart K. Coleman
3rd Place Amateur Adult –  Auliya McCauley-Hartner

Special displays at the September event include the Winners’ Circle and an ArtLink Through Young Eyes exhibits.  The Winners’ Circle is an exhibit of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winning images located at 7 West Pizzeria, 526 Main.  ArtLink Through Young Eyes is a youth project that will be displayed at the ArtWalk information booth located at 4th Avenue and Main Street. The youth project is a compilation youth photos taken using disposable cameras during the July ArtWalk. Children were asked to of record their favorite parts of the event. This youth project illustrates that one is never too young to appreciate the arts…and other important things.

Each ArtLink Longmont event highlights the work of an accomplished artist and the September event is reserved for the 1st Place Professional winner of the Art Through the Lens Photo Contest.  Tom Crosman, the 2010 1st Place Professional, says "I consider myself primarily a nature photographer, though I do commercial photography shooting the work of other artists for their personal portfolios and gallery submissions. I’ve spent a great deal of time in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and in the back country of other states for over 50 years, I attempt to capture those images that depict the art in nature. I believe I have an eye for seeing things others overlook. The image, “Frozen Dreams #4” is an example. Shot from 12 inches above the ice of a frozen lake, it depicts abstractions that can only be seen if you are on your hands and knees.  My goal is to share my love and wonder of the outdoors via the photographs I take. I hope my images invoke the emotions and awe I had when I took them."

The ArtWalk September 17 event will feature many of the favorite outdoor events attendees know and love including “Art in Action,” featuring four live artist demonstrations including pastels with Diane Wood, a multicultural experience with booths and performances by William "Chi Chi" Ledesma, performances by Airborne Gymnastics and Dance, and musical performances from local favorites including Mojomama and Friends. Other activities include face painting, balloon artists, and a children’s paperboard art activity hosted by the artists of the Longmont Studio Tour.
