About Town

About Town - March 14, 2013

Two snow storms in one week! The first was nice and  wet and melted right away and now it is snowing again.

Good for the country. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!  We certainly enjoy Daylight Savings Time, giving us longer evenings.

This weekend is the “wearin’ of the green” in honor of all descendants of Ireland. In the early 1800s, many of those who were jailed in Ireland would be sent to Australia. Many Irish came to the United States to escape the yoke of British tyranny, thus we honor them for their perseverance. Most of us have some Irish blood “by golly!” Wear green and celebrate!

Say, that was a nice snow we had Monday.  It looks like spring is just around the corner. A nice spring snow that melted right away, some crocus are blooming, the days are longer, and Daylight Savings Time is this Sunday morning at 2 a.m., turn your clocks forward one hour.  Yes, spring is sprung.

FOR YOUR SAFETY
When the trailer home burned last week, we wondered if it had smoke detectors?  I haven’t heard, but that is one thing we must all purchase; a smoke detector as well as a carbon monoxide detector. The cost is around $30 for both. Go to Clark’s Hardware today, and be safe. We read where James of the trailer needs clothing (Pants size 30” x 32”, shirts size large, and shoes size 10)) and household goods. Help him out.  Leave stuff at the firehouse, as he lost everything in that fire!

Valentine’s Day should have brought out a lot of love for your companion: a great dinner, flowers, and of course a box of candy.  It is always nice to tell her or him that you appreciate them putting up with you and your traits in spite of it all. Happy Valentine’s Day, you all!

CAN YOU IMAGINE?
Bob Gilson, Webmaster for The Lyons Recorder, announced at the Chamber social that my weekly news had 50,000 hits last year!  Wow, that is a lot! I don’t really know who all these readers are, but they seem to like my news. Thanks, you all!

That was a nice, much needed snow, with more to come.  Maybe we will get some moisture, yet.  I don’t like the cold weather, but it will soon warm up.
Our pal, Geneva Thomas, tells us that daylight savings time will be on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., when we turn our clocks ahead (spring forward, fall back) one hour.  I like the new time, with longer evenings; however, it isn’t too good for kids waiting for the school bus, the farmers, and others making them get out in the dark!

LYONS HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
A group of “old-timers” have gathered to watch the basketball games this past season: Ken and Diane Forsberg, her mother Joyce Jones, Dorothy George, myself, and son Jerry.  We

We had a cold eleven degrees this morning, but no snow. We have to look toward spring snows. A few years ago we had three feet on May 7, which broke the trees, shrubs, etc, causing a lot of damage.  We can’t control the weather!

VALENTINE’S DAY
Be sure to send your best girl and guy a box of chocolates, which should get you in good graces for a few weeks.  This is the time to appreciate our loved ones, those that are here, those that have passed, and to appreciate our world filled with romance and love.  As stated before, Mr. LaVerne would always sneak a big valentine on my typewriter,
