LYONS AREA RESPRESENTATIVE NEEDED FOR ST. VRAIN VALLEY SCHOOL BOARD
We hope someone from this area will apply for the seat in District A for the St. Vrain School Board. It is very important that we have someone from Lyons to tell them what our Lyons schools are all about (see my Letter to the Editor).
CONGRATULATIONS to Jeff Gagliardi and Clark Hodge who won the second annual “Spirit of Lyons Award”, last Tuesday evening at the Lyons Chamber of Commerce Social for their Sketch-A-Palooza event during the Lyons Good Old Days. The event set the Guinness World Record for having over 250 people (they had 372) participate. A truly stunning event, which brought many Lyons residents and visitors out. Hodge, who has been lamenting the fact that the Lyons Good Old Days Parade has been cancelled, is looking for something exciting for this coming Good Old Days, June 22 to 24. A few years ago, he had his own parade with an old firetruck filled with screaming kids. Last year the record breaking Sketch-A-Paloooza. What is coming this year? Stay tuned!
TAKE NOTE
Wayne Werner will be honored for his years of volunteering for the Lyons Visitors’ Center, Golden Gang, Parks and Recreation, Lions Club, etc. A memorial program will honor him during the Lyons Good Old Days on Saturday, June 23. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BETH (FORD) BOSS (98 and still going strong). We wish Beth a very happy birthday. She will be 98 this Sunday, February 5. Send a card to Elizabeth (Ford) Boss, 1021 Woodlawn, #304, Canon City, CO 81212, or an e-mail message: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . She was born in Carr, Colorado, 1914, received her Business Degree from UNC in 1935, and taught three years in Kanorado, Kansas, where she met Adam Ford. She was the Lyons High Business teacher (1942 to 1977), teaching both me (Class of 1945) and my sons (Jerry Class of 1970 & Ron-Class of 1973) and hundreds of students in that 35-year period. Through the years the business department changed from seven manuel typewriters to include 30 electric typewriters and a variety of adding machines, calculators, transcription machines. She taught in the basement of the old high school (torn down in 1976-77) and the new high school, 1975-1977.
She married Adam Ford in 1938, who had three sons: Donald, Justus (J.B.) and Clarence, who graduated from Lyons in 1946. The couple had a son, Bob, graduate of Lyons in 1957, who with wife Judy were teachers in Canon City. Ford ran a dairy on what is now Park Street, and operated a milk route, which he sold to Harry Wedow in 1946. He soon became an expert stone mason, served as town trustee and was a charter member of the Lyons Lions Club. He died of a sudden heart attack in 1972.
Beth retired to Longmont and married her neighbor, Fred Boss, who died in December 1997. In 1998 she moved to Canon City to be near her son Bob and family. Beth has learned the computer and stays in touch with her Lyons teaching co-horts-Marilou Waitz, Rich Cole, Ginger Johnson, Gerald Boland, Henry Bernhardt, Joseph Campbell, to name a few, as well as many of her students via e-mail. She was officer of the Lyons Ditch Co. #1 (that runs from Meadow Park to the St. Vrain River on 2nd Avenue) and worked to get it incorporated. WE TRULY WISH OUR FINE BUSINESS TEACHER, BETH, A HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AND MANY MORE!
FAREWELL DEBI STEVENSON
We hate to say farewell to Debi Stevenson, who has sold her home on Main Street and is moving to Longmont, to save time and gas and walking. She, the sister of Kathy Haines, has lived here for several years, and has given piano and Japanese lessons, written plays and participates in The Longmont Community Theatre. Through the years, we thank her for playing the keyboard for many town activities and parties, and she raised $9800 last year to benefit the victims of the Japanese tsunami. She will be missed. Good luck, Debi. Come up and visit us!
