Colorado Spirit Planning Many Recovery Related Summer Events

By Janaki Jane - Colorado Spirit
Colorado Spirit is planning a busy summer of events. The Lyons Youth Summer Series for teens, six more summer events in Allenspark, flood open mics at Oskar Blues, helping to coordinate Lyons One Year Strong flood

anniversary events for Lyons, and looking into sponsoring mold mitigation and dry-wall workshops. Other events are being worked on.

The Lyons Youth Summer Series has met twice, and has two more meetings: on Tuesdays, July 15 and 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Sandstone Park, for ages 11to 15. Robin Lyons, M.A., and Beth Knorek, M. Ed, have been working with Adriana Blacker, Town of Lyons Youth Specialist. According to Blacker, the 8th graders initiated the idea of the program when they expressed a desire to take care of themselves and their community. Specifically, the teens were interested in two things: 1) continuing the wellness and mindfulness programs they had studied during the school year, that help them to become strong and deal with trauma and stress, especially post flood, and 2) giving back to their community in an active, hands in the dirt kind of way.

In the first meeting the teens put plants in pots, learning about re-growing and rebuilding takes time and nurturing and Edward Kean, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Town of Lyons, had a conversation with the teems about what it would look like for them to give back to the Town this summer. The youth will also be joining the Golden Gang for lunch in July. Contact Adriana at (303) 823-8250 x16 to register.

At the 7 p.m. July 16, in Allenspark, Jonathan Singer, the Colorado State Representative for District 11, which includes Lyons and Allenspark, will explain the disaster tax relief bill he sponsored and answer questions; Rocky Mountain National Park will talk about Wild Basin, open and closed trails, and the Park’s response to natural disasters; the Red Cross is sending a team to discuss preparedness; and Katie Arrington, Flood Recovery Specialist for Boulder County will share what Boulder County has done and what they will be doing. There will be an informational meeting in August with a different set of speakers, as well. Contact Janaki Jane at (720) 317-9748 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Flood Open Mics at Oskar Blues in Lyons and the Old Gallery in Allenspark are a chance for locals to express themselves about the flood: before, during or after; the good, the bad or the ugly; the event, the recovery, or the new normal. Musicians, storytellers, jokesters, visual artists, and poets: are all invited. Anything relating to what happened here or in another disaster is relevant to these evenings. There will be three Flood Open Mics at Oskar Blues on Tuesdays in August and September, and at The Old Gallery in Allenspark on Thursday, August 7, and Wednesday September 3, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Colorado Spirit is looking into sponsoring a round-table of experts on mold mitigation, and a workshop on dry-wall removal and repair. The team wants to know if residents of the area are interested in either or both of these events. Colorado Spirit’s Sally Truitt will be taking the lead, while working closely with the Town, in facilitating and coordinating Lyons One Year Strong flood anniversary celebrations. This will be an opportunity for residents of Lyons and the surrounding areas to be able to see how far they have come, while looking to the future as well as acknowledging the past.  The intention is to create a unified presentation of all equally important events around the anniversary.
