New Site Orientation

Getting around the site: Here's picture of our old site. Its main navigation tool was the main menu in black along the top of the screen. This is analogous to the choosing the sections of a big Sunday paper. A secondary way to filter the news was the vertical menu of subsections in yellow along the left side of the screen.

Our readers enjoyed this design but it presents several problems. We were running out of space to add news features on the main menu. Having two areas for navigation is a problem as the size of the newspaper grows. And two menus doesn't work on mobile devices.

Therefore, we combined the two menus into one. We positioned it along the left side so we can add new sections more easily. The subsections previously displayed in the old yellow menu are now displayed indented.

Here the reader clicked Lifestyle. It became bold/highlighted and all the life style articles were displayed. Then the reader click "About Town". It became bold/highlighted and only Laverne's About Town articles are displayed.

Read More: Our old site had "Read More" buttons as shown circled in red. It allowed us to display the first paragraph of many articles. The reader clicked "Read More" to read the full article.

All the articles on our web site use to be free. Now, only the first paragraph is free. So "Read More" has been replaced by "Login to read more" and link to "Purchase a subscription" has been added.

We use to use Google Calendar for community event listings. They display poorly on the smaller screens of mobile devices. And when the number of events became larger they were unwieldy. So we've switched to a much simpler table listing of events.

We've switched to a news classified system. We loved the old one but it was too reliant on a the horizontal display of listing categories. It caused mobile readers to rotate their devices back and forth. The new classified uses a grid layout that should work better on all devices.
