After living in western Pennsylvania for most of their lives, Jay and Elaine Hodge decided it was time for a change; time to live closer to a son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, as well as two sisters who had all relocated to the Front Range of Colorado. Hodge decided to take the work experience he had accumulated in the foundry business and as a human resource officer, and apply it to the wine, spa, special events, and guest accommodations business. As a result, we have a new owner at the Rock n River Resort just outside of Lyons.
Hodge has recently joined the Lyons Area Chamber of Commerce and is getting to know the community. He has retained the services of Temple Hay, who manages the La Bellazza, a full-service on-site spa, and Laurie Skeie-Huesers, who has been handling the duties at Ciatano, the on site winery and tasting room. Together this team (Jay, Elaine, Temple, and Laurie) plans to introduce some changes, while maintaining some continuity.
Right now during the winter lull, the hours for Ciatano’s tasting room are Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beginning in May, they will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
You will still be able to sample five of their dozen or so extraordinary wines for only five bucks! And you can go home with a bottle (or case) as well as some delicious smoked trout, jerky, and gourmet cheeses. Hodge also plans to have local musicians playing music for guests on the lovely back patio on weekends once the weather gets warmer.
The resort still has seven charming rooms (three with kitchens, and all with microwaves and refrigerators), including on two-bedroom suite, which can be rented for individual night stays, or for small groups for weddings, reunions, corporate retreats, and holiday parties. The resort also features a full-service kitchen if the need for catering arises. Since Elaine has a background in art education and flower arrangement, Hodge would like to pursue having regular weekend art affairs on the picturesque grounds of the resort.
Speaking of the grounds, Jay says the ponds are stocked with plenty of trout, including some epic whoppers. Fishing is still an option at Rock n River, and if your luck is good, you can have your catch cleaned and grilled while you wait.
