SPOT ON SENIORS
BY KATHLEEN SPRING

TIME TO WORK CALENDARS FOR LOTS OF UPCOMING FUN FEBRUARY EVENTS

Golden Gang members join arms in solidarity, working, playing,
eating and singing together. It's easy to spot a member
with their bright gold t-shirts. Darlene Godfrey (left),
joins arms with Vance French. Geneva Sabados and
Maxine Harkalis celebrated their birthdays.

Don't delay! Mark your calendars and reserve your spot now for several upcoming senior-sponsored events open to Lyons citizens.

SWEETHEART'S BANQUET

Wondering where you can spend St. Valentine's Day in Lyons? The Lyons Golden Gang is presenting a concert with multiple performers on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m., at the Walt Self Center. A $10 donation requested, and includes desserts during intermission. Organizer Vance French will be singing an Elvis medley including "Love Me Tender," and other favorites like "Unchained Melody." Vance will also be singing a duet of "My Antonia" with the Longmont Idol winner Rachel Bashor.

Also on the bill are Zeke and Janey Little on guitar and mandolin singing folk love songs, Brian Schey and Erin Humphries doing gypsy love songs on the accordion and ukulele, and lastly Wyl Collins on the Australian didgeridoo. (See ad for more details)

HISTORY LOVERS

Do you like history? Bonnie Kohl will be performing as Helen Hunt Jackson, an 18th century activist who helped publicize the prejudice toward Indians and terrible conditions in mines of Colorado. She will re-enact the life of Jackson, dressed in fashionable clothes of the day. See part one at the Walt Self Center at the Golden Gang lunch Wednesday, Feb. 17 at noon, or part two at the Lyons History Video Project "Community History Party" on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. Call (303) 823-0997 for more details.

NEW RED HAT MEMBERS

Want to join Lyons' Red Hat group? Joining a Red Hat group can be looked at as widening your circle of potential new relationships. Seniors 60 years of age or over, who are active, fun-loving, and kind-hearted and are able to spend $15 a month on trying out six new restaurants, plus doing six activities a year, should contact Kathleen Spring (303) 823-0997 to be considered to fill positions vacated by resigning members. Golden Gang members get first choice of spots.

Minnie's Red Hat Club is wrapping up its first year by returning to the elegant Black Bear Inn for lunch on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. Queen Bee Kathleen Spring is bringing a photograph album of the year's adventures.

CONDOLENCES

It is sad to report that Bertha Dryg, 97, passed away after the trauma of suffering a femur bone break, despite top care at the hospital and nursing home. LaVern Johnson, who also broke a femur bone and had her son take care of her, said, "Bertha was really a sweet lady, and I commend her son, Fred, and the others for taking care of her. I admired her coming to Lyons so far from home, and living here as long as she could."

Condolences also go out to Dorothy Papousek's family. Dorothy, 87, was well-liked by the Golden Gang. She would drive to the Golden Gang meetings from her home near McCall Lake, and later from her home in Longmont.

NEWS, NEEDS and ACTIVITIES

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Marie McCreery, Sapan Ripoche, Mike Tovani, Bob Allen, Tommy Noyes, Maxine Harkalis and Bill Jackson. They are all active Golden Gang members who know how to entertain their fellow lunch-mates.

The Tuesday and Wednesday 10:15 a.m. exercise class for seniors in Lyons continues. Participants can sit or hold on to a chair while doing the exercises. It is based on balance and stretching exercises provided by Boulder County Aging Services as part of their Falling Prevention workshop. Instruction is provided free by the Golden Gang. Call Janet Freeman for details (303) 823-5223.

Know radios? A senior has been looking for a while to find someone to install her replacement radio in her old car. Call (303) 823-0997 with information.

Another Golden Gang member's husband has just fallen on some ice on their porch step and broke his femur bone. Watch out seniors. This is the fourth one in seven months. Also get-well wishes go out to Scott Corwin.

The Generational Active People (GAP) will be meeting Feb. 8 at the middle-senior high school during lunch time, and the fourth Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Walt Self Center. Call Paula Randazzo (303) 823-6622, or (303) 441-1555 x92224#.
